Another important clue is finding nits. Nits are lice eggs that are firmly attached to individual strands of hair, usually close to the scalp. Unlike ordinary dandruff or loose flakes of skin, nits tend to remain attached when you move or shake the hair.
If you suspect head lice, good lighting and a fine-toothed lice comb can help you inspect the hair carefully. Separate the hair into small sections and examine the area close to the scalp, especially behind the ears and around the back of the neck.
Treatment usually involves a product specifically designed for head lice. Follow the instructions on the product carefully, because some treatments require a second application after several days to eliminate newly hatched lice. Wet-combing with a fine-toothed comb can also help remove lice and nits.
It’s important not to blame or shame someone who has head lice. Having lice does not mean a person is dirty or has poor hygiene. Lice spread primarily through close head-to-head contact and can affect people with clean or dirty hair.
Avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, scarves, headphones, or other items that have recently been in contact with the hair. Household members should also check their hair if someone has confirmed lice, particularly if they have been experiencing itching.
Bedding, clothing, and recently used personal items should be handled according to appropriate lice-control guidance. There is generally no need to use dangerous chemicals or pesticides around the home.
If the scalp develops significant sores, swelling, pus, severe irritation, or signs of infection, medical advice is appropriate. A pharmacist or healthcare professional can also help determine which treatment is suitable, especially for young children or when previous treatments have not worked.
Most importantly, head lice are treatable. Finding them can be stressful, but with careful inspection, appropriate treatment, and follow-up combing, the problem can usually be managed effectively.
